Maui Ultra Fins introduces Quick-n-Easy fin attachment
Everybody knows the fumbling to move the plate into the right position and to find the screw hole in the plate when attaching a US-box fin to the board.
Forget this forever. With Quick-n-Easy the fin is fixed within seconds.
The solution is a slot in the box which allows you to move the screw together with the plate directly into the box. By using a countersunk headed screw (M4x22mm) the fin is securely fastened. As an additional advantage, the screw head remains within the box and nothing disturbs the water flow.
Maui Ultra Fins -  the most innovative fin company.

HD Mast Double Cam Setup
Time to plug Sergey from videojibe.com !  He is one serious tinkerer whose many DIY projects have given us a cool POV for mast cams.  By using two mast cams, we can now see both sides of the sail, analyze hand and footwork during transitions, and get a more complete picture of what's going on.  Think of it as being hovered over by a helicopter... without the helicopter.

Billabong XXL Biggest Wave Award 2010
Aloha.....
We like to congratulate Sebastian Steudtner to the Billabong XXL Award 2010.
He finished first in the Billabong XXL Biggest Wave division for a giant tow-in ride at Jaws, Maui, Hawaii on a monster 66 ft. wave that took everyone by surprise for its size and speed. It was the first time a German surfer had appeared on the XXL stage.
When we met 2 years ago he was so focused on his goals and now can easily reflect on his paid off efforts:
“It feels good; it’s what I live for, I moved to Hawaii when I was 16; a Hawaiian family took me in taught me how to surf. I am honored to win this thing.”
Maui Ultra Fins also feels honored to have worked with his talent and values his input on Tow-in fins and SUP fins. We selected one of his Jaws images for our ads above recently, working with him closely on the design. The “biggest” title in surfing was now added to the catalogue with $15,000 and a Honda Aquatrax watercraft with HSA sled.

SUP R&D
Almost nobody tests the limits of our SUP RACE fins like Dwight Fisher with his NC Paddle Surfer Blog www.ncpaddlesurfer.blogspot.com.
Performing real-life R&D equipped with Garmin GPS and video documentations, his expert perspective creates a more than detailed analysis. To round it up, very important environmental information and links to almost anything SUP, Blogs and Forums.

Maui Ultra Fins welcomes Taty Frans
It has been our mission all along to make the best fins possible and to work with the finest athletes around. Maui Ultra Fins is honored to include top Freestyler Taty Frans from Bonaire to our international team. Taty is more than impressed with our style fins and after training in Bonaire and Maui the last months he is using the fins on the first PWA event this year in Podersdorf, Lake Neusiedeler. To make his effort and expertise more meaningful he participates in further fin optimization in order to develop the best freestyle fins.
Taty won the PWA Sylt Freestyle event last year and wants to succesfully continue this year:

“Hi All,
Maui Ultra Fins, men what can I say.. these fins will ultramize your board no matter how bad your board felt when you had the other fins on them.
I knew this was the way to go, so the funny thing is that I was the one asking Maui Ultra Fins for support and they quickly had a positive answer.
To me being with in a selective team and also together with Philip Koester it just amazes me, I am grateful to be already working on a freestyle fin.
Thank Rick and Olaf.

Let's have a great year.”

Philip Koester in Maui / New Fin Box System
During his one month visit to Maui Philip Koester has been working closely with us on his new Fin setups. Philip also introduces our new logo on his boards and sails soon to be found in our new ads and magazines.
New fin box systems are on the horizon and we are the first to provide a fin base to switch between US based fins to the new not yet revealed “box”. Our design will let you use your current Maui Ultra Fins on the new upcoming boards.
More to come...

Mistral Boards are here !
In time for the slalom season all Mistral slalom boards arrived on Maui. Mistral team rider Dan Ellis went out for a session with us to evaluate the new Maui Ultra Fins SL 904.
“ Today I tested a Maui Ultra SL904 34 production fin in the 95 fully wound on 7.0. There was a pretty big swell so it was choppy as hell inside at Kanaha and rough on the outside, there we're also some short smooth sections in the troughs so pretty much everything! I was impressed by the fin all around very stable and predictable and not draggy. Felt like it had good acceleration in the flats and nice to change direction at full speed, it really didn't want to spin out even when i tried. I also sailed with a 34 Falcon and the MUF felt much nicer and i got better speeds on my GPS. “

Robby Swift K 89 on X-Quads
After a testing and developing to customize Robby Swift’s PWA Quad boards the results are in. Stock 9 cm and 15.5 cm X-quads are his weapons of choice for his 69 liter board.
On his larger boards the sizes go up to 10 cm and 16.5 cm.
The challenge was to make the quad boards release better.
In general the speed, grip and agility was continued from the proven X-Twins. Now to release the fins was possible with the higher efficiency of the smaller fin area.
With his 3rd place PWA overall finish we are looking forward to another successful PWA season.

“Made from awesome”
Ashley from Australia checked in after testing his new fins:

Our 4 fins arrived safe and sound. They are great. The speed through the turn is the best, out the back, in the bottom turn, in the top turn. - "made from awesome".

I have sailed 3 times in small side-onshore conditions and can't wait to take a trip to our good wave spots.
I have posted a review on the local forums and I believe one of the guys from a local shop is going to/has contact you guys
I had been raving on down at the beach.

Thanks heaps,

Ashley

He also posted the following review on the seabreeze.com forum:

Folks we had 4 Maui Ultra Fins (MUF) fins shipped over from Maui.
Basically each Fin is hand chiseled from a single slab of awesome.

Actually there is more science than craftsmanship to the fins but I will let the website explain.
http://www.mauiultrafins.com

These are upright pointer fins for waves. The basic philosophy just questions why for years we have had wave fins shaped like a dolphin's dorsal fin. The site also explains the benefit of a properly selected foil with an appropriate Reynold's number for our speeds.

The performance was amazing and by far the best bang for buck investment in windsurfing I have made. (AUD$130 landed!!!)
So on a price comparison that outways all the other technical advances our sport has seen. (non dacron sails, Epoxy/Carbon boards, skinny masts, carbon booms)

The best part for me was they hold their speed through a turn really really well and are therefore much faster and also looser on a wave.
I guess cause you don't have the raked section acting like a sea anchor as you turn.

I will address each point in a little more detail.

Pointing and lack of Spinout
The site makes some pretty spectacular claims but I have to say its true. They really do not spin out easily and just continue to point to windward until you lose sail pressure and boat speed.
At this stage I am not pointing too much higher than normal in order to maintain good speed, but at least as you "pinch" to windward and explore how high it will go you don't spin out but instead just lose efficiency in the sail. I also have to work on my technique - it takes some getting used to.

Maintaining Speed in a turn
This is super obvious in the jibe out the back. You can power around with heaps of aggression and just plane out a turn.
On the wave face at Scarborough it is less obvious, you just feel a little faster into the top turn and can travel further down the line if you need to go searching for a peak.
I think this is going to be fair easier to feel on a smooth wave face outside of Perth metro.

Agility on the wave
My JP real world wave used to not carve back into a wave particularly hard, and often during a bottom turn I would have to transfer my weight to the back foot to get the nose to swing back into the face. That problem has gone away.

Anything negative?
* I have not really seen any advantage in top end speed, but that is not my concern in the waves.
* I guess the upright design will pick up more weed so may not be great in the winter storms in Cottesloe.
* I was all set to buy a RRD twin fin next season and now I just can't justify it.

PS. The online purchase was easy, they email a Paypal link. Shipping is USD$27 but just get your friends to join in.
