Delta Lloyd Regatta: Day One - 6 Races in a Shifty Chilly Breeze

deltalloydThe Delta Lloyd Regatta, the fifth event in the 2009-2010 ISAF Sailing World Cup series, started today in Medemblik, The Netherlands, in a shifty breeze in the teens and chilly conditions with the RS:X Women and RS:X Men completing 3 races each.

Blanca Manchon [ESP} and Marina Alabau [ESP] traded places in the first two races to dominate the RS:X women's fleet overall and then went on to take first and second places in the third to end the day in those positions on the leaderboard. It's good to see the Spanish Dream Team still firing on all cylinders!

Thirty Olympic Medallists Ready For Delta Lloyd Regatta

deltalloydMedemblik, Netherlands: Thirty Olympic medallists are ready for the Delta Lloyd Regatta 2010. This 5th event in the ISAF Sailing World Cup has attracted a very talented field with numerous World Champions. The 2010 edition has set record high pre-entries in all classes including the 2.4, with a total of 707 boats from 53 countries. As usual, the largest fleets are in the Laser, RS:X men and 470 men. Racing will start on Wednesday May 26th and will conclude with the Medal race on Sunday May 30th.

RS:X Sicily Grand Prix: Lukasz Grodzicki Wins in Style

lukaszgrodzicki Lukasz Grodzicki, in the end, is the winner of Sicily Grand Prix Regatta, one of the jewels of the XXV edition of the World Festival on the Beach in Mondello. The blond Polish guy, 14th last in the last ISAF World Ranking, won thanks to a brilliant performance that let him close down the lead established by Mariano Reutemann [ARG], 23rd in the ISAF Wold Ranking, after a strong battle similar to the RS:X European Windsurfing Team Racing Championship final between France and Argentina.

2010 RS:X & Techno 293 European Windsurfing Team Racing Championships

2010etrcArgentina and Italy are on equal points in the lead at the RS:X  European Windsurfing Team Racing Championships at the end of the second day in Mondello, Sicily. Over in the Techno 293 championships it is the unbeaten French Team who are dominating the competition.

Nevin Sayre on Rebooting Windsurfing Development in The USA

nevinsayreNot since 1992 has a windsurfer representing the United States won an Olympic medal, when Mike Gebhardt won the silver medal in Barcelona, Spain. In 1984, the inaugural year for Men's Olympic Windsurfing, Scott Steele won a silver medal in Los Angeles, and Gebhardt won the bronze medal in Seoul, South Korea in 1988. Women's Windsurfing became an Olympic sport in 1992, and to date no American woman has won an Olympic Windsurfing medal.

ISAF Mid Year Meeting

isaf_logoThe Council and Events Committee of the  met this past weekend for the 2010 ISAF Mid-Year Meeting at the Ramada Hotel on the shores of Lake Balaton in Hungary. This traditionally deals with matters deferred from the previous Annual Meeting on which further information and consideration are required. Indeed this was the main agenda item for the Events Committee.

2010 Semaine Olympique Francaise:RS:X Day 5 - Its a done deal

sofAt the end of race day Day 5 at the Semaine Olympique Francaise, it seems like the names of the winners in the RS:X windsurfing men and women's fleets are a done deal. Both have comfortable points advantages so barring natural disasters Bryony Shaw [GBR] and Byron Kokalanis [GRE] should both standing on the top step of the podium on Friday night.

sofAnother long day of waiting was endured by everyone before the wind finally filled enough to get two races off. Birthday girl Bryony Shaw [GBR] has extended her lead to 13 points in the RS:X Women's windsurfing fleet whilst Piotr Myszka [POL] holds on at the top of the RS:X men's windsurf fleet with just a one point advanatge.

sofThe AP flags were raised and lowered several times today at Semaine Olympique Francaise as sailors met the same light air fate as the past two days. By the end of the day, the RS:X Men and RS:X Women had both squeazed out one race, but it wasn't the full day of consistent racing they craved. With racing ending Friday, racers must make every race count in order to stay in the top 10.

Light and flukey wind conditions in Hyeres meant a long and fruitless wait for the  66 RS:X men and 33 RS:X women windsurfers registered to race for the Semaine Olympique Francaise. This is the 4th stop on the the ISAF Sailing World Cup.
